Review

A devastating novel about a butler who has spent his life so committed to dignity and duty that he failed to notice the people he loved slipping away. Ishiguro's prose is so quiet you almost miss what it's doing. Then it ruins you. The unreliable first-person narration is one of the great achievements in modern English fiction.

"What is the point of worrying oneself too much about what one could or could not have done to control the course one's life took?"
